March Madness!

The NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship is a single elimination tournament held each spring featuring 65 college basketball teams in the United StatesThe tournament was coined “March Madnessin 1982 by a CBS Sports commentator by the name of Brent Musburger, as the tournament takes place mainly during the month of March. The tournament takes place over 3 weeks at locations across the United States, and the national semifinals (the Final Four) have become one of the nation’s most notorious sporting events.

  • TOP RANKED TEAMS – 9 teams, since the beginning of the seeding process, have entered the tournament ranked #1 in at least 1 poll and gone on to win the tournament:
    • 1976: Indiana
    • 1978: Kentucky
    • 1982: North Carolina
    • 1992: Duke
    • 1995: UCLA
    • 2000: Michigan State
    • 2001: Duke
    • 2007: Florida
  • #1 SEEDS – Since the NCAA started seeding teams in 1979, the championship game has matched two #1 seeds only 5 times:
    • 1982 North Carolina defeated Georgetown
    • 1993 North Carolina defeated Michigan
    • 1999 Connecticut defeated Duke
    • 2005 North Carolina defeated Illinois
    • 2007 Florida defeated Ohio State
  • CHAMPIONSHIP MARGIN
    • Greatest margin of victory in a championship game: 30 points (UNLV 103–Duke 73, 1990).
  • NATIONAL TITLES
    • With 11 national titles, UCLA currently holds the record for the most NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championships. University of Kentucky is second, with 7 national titles.
  • NEXT YEAR COLLAPSES
    • In 2008, both of the 2007 finalists, Florida and Ohio State, failed to make the tournament.This is the first time since 1980 that neither of the previous year’s finalists made the NCAA Tournament.
